Dax's Flight to the US

On Wednesday Dax, my overgrown German Shepherd dog, took his first ever flight. Originally they were supposed to fly him into Pittsburgh International Airport but apparently there were no carriers that could accommodate such an overgrown dog!

So eventually they gave up and told us that they couldn't get him to Pittsburgh as promised. I think it was Thursday night last week I had a voice mail left from what sounded like Dallas International Airport asking me to call them back and confirm that I would take delivery of Dax. I nearly had kittens of my own as I saw how far away this was!

It turned out that there is a Dulles International Airport, and the way it is pronounced sounds very much like Dallas. That was a much more manageable four hour drive away near Washington DC. So I hired a large pickup truck for Wednesday of this week.

On Tuesday Par Air (who were moving Dax) sent me an email to say they had supplied the wrong arrival time and said it would in fact be 14:10. There was no date on this very short email and so I was very nervous, I emailed them for clarification and thankfully he was still getting in on Wednesday at 14:10.

I set off on Wednesday morning in my pickup truck. The cargo people asked me to get there for 3pm. I was a few minutes late after doing about 250 miles and travelling through three states. They had left him in the corner in their warehouse stuck in his cage. They seemed to be of the belief that he might be a savage animal as they retreated behind some doors before I was allowed to let him out.

Poor guy seems to have made it over OK. Very tired and disoriented. He has also worn out his squeak and has a very sore throat right now. I am guessing he cried for most of the way over. We drove back and got back into Pittsburgh after 8pm. My neighbour helped me move his air kennel into the basement and I showed Dax around his new apartment.

Dax seems to have settled in although it is strange not having a garden or a nearby field he can just run around in. We found the off leash area in Frick Park which he absolutely loved, althogh he was quite overwhelmed when seven or eight dogs came to greet him. Good to have him out here with me.

AngelinaDax is super cute! I would love to meet him and take him for a walk . I'm sure he wouldn't mind some extra attention:^)

Marcus D. Hanwell on :

Marcus D. HanwellHe is a big attention seeker and has never refused extra attention before. Especially if it involves walks, playing or any kind of attention for that matter!

seele on :

seeleoh my gosh, how big is your dog? the drive from DC to Pittsburgh isn't too bad (I am originally from Pittsburgh and now live in the DC area). Just make sure you are not in DC between 7AM and 9AM and 4PM to 7PM unless you want to sit in traffic for a few hours.

Marcus D. HanwellYeah the drive wasn't too bad. Doing it back and forth in one day was pretty tough. Especially in the enormous pickup I hired! Dax is pretty over grown and I have been asked before if he was crossed with a greyhound!
